History of Our Community
Early Settlement:
The area now known as Somerville was first settled by Europeans in 1629 as part of Charlestown. It was originally used for farming and grazing pastures, known as the Cow Commons.
Colonial Era:
In 1704, the Powder House was built to store the community’s gun powder, which played a significant role during the American Revolution when British General Thomas Gage seized gunpowder from it on September 1st, 1774, providing a Spark of the Revolution that began on April 19th, 1775.
19th Century:
- Somerville separated from Charlestown and was incorporated as a town in 1842. The town saw significant growth with the advent of the railroad and industrialization.
20th Century:
- Somerville transitioned from an industrial hub to a more residential community. It was named the best-run city in Massachusetts by The Boston Globe in 2006. The city received the All-America City Award in 1972, 2009, and 2015.
- The Guitar-Hero computer game and Marshmallow Fluff were both invented in Somerville.
Modern Day:
- Today, Somerville is known for its vibrant community, cultural diversity, and as the home of Tufts University. It has become one of the most densely populated municipalities in New England.
- The city is one of the most ethnically-diverse cities in the U.S., with more than 50 languages spoken in Somerville Public Schools.
- After New York City, Somerville has more artists per capita than any other U.S. city.
